Historical reference: On April 17, 1938, the best representatives of the Crimean Tatar public figures: writers, ethnographers, publishers, teachers, scientists, cultural workers, and politicians were shot in the Simferopol prison on charges of “counterrevolutionary bourgeois-nationalist action”.
The formal accusation was lodged in participation of the “Milli Firka” party activities, nationalism and espionage in favor of Germany, Britain and other countries. However, a real aim of the execution was liquidation of an intellectual part of the Crimean Tatar people.
This tragedy is one of the largest in the history of the Crimean Tatar people, some historians even put it next to the consequences of the Deportation of 1944.
