The Ukrainian Post State Enterprise “Ukrposhta” put into circulation the new envelope depicting the outstanding Crimean Tatar poet, historian and philologist Amdi Giraybay.

Theу envelope depicts Amdi Giraybay’s portrait and his life years «Амді Гірайбай. 1901-1930».
According to “Ukrposhta” its circulation comprises 577 000 pcs.

Amdi Giraybay (given name Abdulafat Lyatifov) (1901-1930) – Crimean Tatar poet, historian and philologist. Born in Eni-Kale village in the family of a Muslim divine. He finished primary school in Karasubazar, and then studied at secondary school-rushdiye in Simferopol.

In 1921 he was enrolled to workers’ courses of KrymGU (Crimean State University), but gave up it soon due to financial difficulties. Then he worked in Narkomnats.

Amdi Giraybay wrote his first verse in 1913. The peak of his talent falls on 1918-1923. In this period he wrote his best works: “Dzhigitke” (To a Horseman) 1918, “Anma Su Kunleri” (Don’t Recall that Days) 1920, “Yash Tatarlarga” (To Young Tatars) 1921, “Khosh Keldiniz” (Wellcome) 1921. At that period he also wrote such plays as: “Eski Tatar Mektebi” (An Old Tatar School) 1921, “Oksuzler” (Orphans) 1923. Some of Giraybay’s works cover the social and political events of the late 18th century in Crimea: poems “Tintuv” (Roundup) 1920, “Kechti Endi” (Passed On) 1922, “Idzhret” (Emigration) 1923.

In 1923 the notable political figure of the first Crimean Government Veli Ibragimov promoted Amdi Giraybay’s visit to Turkey. There he studied at Istanbul university, wrote dissertation titled “the History of Crimea” in which he developed the ideas of pan-Turkism.

In 1926 he returned to Crimea. He worked in regional council of Association of new alphabet. In 1928 he was arrested in connection with the trial against the Crimean Tatar national party “Milli-Firka”. He was charged of nationalism and spying. On December 17, 1928 the OGPU trial jury sentenced him to extreme penalty.

He was executed on September 13, 1930 in Butyrskaya Prizon.

Restored in rights in 1991.
