On March 13, 2014, Mr Ivan Shimanovich UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights had a phone conversation with the Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Mr Refat Chubarov, during which the latter outlined the situation in Crimea and violation of the human rights in the region.

Ivan Shimanovich told Refat Chubarov that he faced the insurmountable obstacles created by the current Crimean government, and thus he had no possibility to visit Crimea to assess the current situation and fulfill his mission to protect the human rights in Crimea and meet the representatives of all parties.

Nevertheless, Mr Shimanovich said that he is going to submit a special report to the UN Secretary-General about gross violations of human rights in Crimea based on multiple reliable sources that allow giving a thorough objective description of the situation in Crimea.

He also underlined that UN will do its best to protect the rights of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people and other citizens living in Crimea, and protect people’s lives from any threats.
