Mejlis Head Mustafa Jemilev Visits Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
From July 19 to 21, 2013, the Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, MP of Ukraine Mustafa Jemilev is making his visit to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) invited by Mr Hasan Bozer, Speaker of TRNC.
Mr Aslan Omer Qirimli, Head of the Association of the Crimean Tatars in Kyiv joined Mejlis Head Mustafa Jemilev.
The main goal of M.Jemilev’s visit to TRNC is participation in the official events timed to the 39th anniversary of the operation of the Turkish military forces in Cyprus Island against “black colonels” that made the military revolt in the island, committed the ethnic cleansing against the Turkish population and tried to join the island to Greece.
After the parade at the central street named after Fazyl Kuchuk in Nikosia the Chairman of Mejlis met with Mr Dervis Eroglu, TRNC’s President, Ms Sibel Siber, Prime Minister, Mr Hasan Bozer, Speaker of the Parliament and Mr Suat Gunsel, chancellor of the Middle Eastern University. The parties discussed the issues relating to strengthening of the cultural and business relations between Crimea and Northern Cyprus. Mejlis Head M.Jemilev also gave the chancellor of the Middle Eastern University the list of new students that passed testing in the Department of Education and Culture at the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People and that will study at the Middle Eastern University since 2013.
During the meeting with Ms Sibel Siber, Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus the Mejlis Head Mustafa Jemilev told about the historical ties between Crimea and Cyprus reminding her that more than 150 years ago the ship with refugees from Crimea arrived at Cyprus Island that at that time was the territory of the Ottoman Empire and around 150 – 200 Crimean Tatar families settled in the island. The Prime Minister Ms Sibel Siber replied with a smile that her ancestors were among the refugees that arrived at this ship.
During the iftar on July 20 evening the Mejlis Head Mustafa Jemilev also held brief meetings with Mr Besir Atalay, Vice Prime Minister of Turkey and Mr Jamil Chichek, Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey that attended the festival in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Mr Jamil Chichek invited the Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Mustafa Jemilev to Ankara in August this year to discuss the problems of the Crimean Tatars in details.
During his visit to TRNC the Mejlis Head Mustafa Jemilev was accompanied by Mr Selyami Kachamak, representative of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People in TRNC, Head of the Cyprus branch of the Labor Bank of Turkey.
