Il’mi Ametov, Famous Crimean Sculptor Has Passed Away

Last night the famous Crimean sculptor, activist of the Crimean Tatar national movement Il’mi Ametov has passed away after the long illness.

The farewell ceremony, held on August 16, 2011 in the Central Mosque of Aqmescit (Simferopol) Kebir Jami was attended by the Chairman of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Mustafa Jemilev, Mufti of Crimean Muslims Hajji Emirali Ablaev, members of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, many his friends and team-mates, veterans of the Crimean Tatar national movement, representatives of the Crimean authorities, public and political figures.

Il’mi Ametov was an author of many monuments and sculptures that were installed on the territory of Crimea.

In particular, he was an author of the monument to the victims of the World War Two that was installed in Solnechnaya Dolina settlement next to Sudak, monument to the victims of deportation in Mezhvodnoe settlement, Chernomorsk region, steles with historic names of such villages as Ay-Serez (Mezhdurech’e), Taraktash (Dachnoe) and Tokluk (Bogatovka).

The cross made by Ilmi Ametov decorates the building of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv patriarchate in Simferopol. The most famous sculptor’s work is the monument to the local resident of Taraktash (Dachnoe) settlement next to Sudak Seyit-oglu Seydamet who was executed in Tsarist time on an unfounded accusation and was then glorified in Crimean Tatar folklore. Together with other authors Il’mi Ametov took part in creation of the monument to the Soviet general – dissident Peter Grigorenko that was installed on Soviet square in Simferopol.
