Mejlis Head Mustafa Jemilev’s Working Meeting with Minister of Culture of Ukraine Mr Leonid Novohatko

On September 5, 2013, Mustafa Jemilev, Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, MP of Ukraine hold the working meeting with the Minister of Culture of Ukraine Mr Leonid Novohatko.

The main topic of the meeting was consideration by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the Draft Law of Ukraine “On the Concept of the State Ethnonational Policy of Ukraine”, registered by the MP of Ukraine M.Jemilev in July this year, as well as the Draft Law of the same topic developed by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

During the consideration of this issue the Minister of culture expressed his great interest in the adoption of the document that gives grounding to the formation of the full-fledged state ethnopolitics which unfortunately was not adopted for all these 22 years that passed since Ukraine’s independence.

In his turn Mustafa Jemilev confirmed the statements that he made earlier that in case of the compliance of the key items of both draft laws he, as the member of the Parliament of Ukraine will consider the possibility to withdraw his draft law on the draft Concept “in order to adopt the draft proposed by the Cabinet of Ministers as soon as possible”. Such Mustafa Jemilev’s position has found understanding and support of the Minister of Culture of Ukraine.

The participants of the meeting also discussed other topical issues of the cultural development of Crimea.

Note:  On July 5, 2013, Mustafa Jemilev, Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, MP of Ukraine registered the Drat Law of Ukraine “On the Concept of the State Ethnonational Policy of Ukraine” in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

As the explanatory note to this draft law said: “The Concept of the state ethnonational policy must provide the law-makers, state servants a single understanding of the principles, goals, directions of the state ethnonational policy. Thus, a barrier will put to the appearance of the contradictory provisions in the laws and in normative acts in particular, free interpreting of the essence of the state’s policy at the local level regarding the national majority and national minorities”.

Earlier the draft of this Law has been already submitted to the consideration of the Parliament of Ukraine of the 6th convocation by the MP M.Jemilev.

The same drat law was also submitted by the Government of Ukraine to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in March 2012.
