Chairman of Mejlis Mustafa Jemilev Held Meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Sweden Carl Bildt

The meeting that was held on September 17, 2011 in Simferopol was also attended by the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to Ukraine Stefan Gullgren and the President of the World Congress of Crimean Tatars, First Deputy Chairman of Mejlis Refat Chubarov.

The Head of the Foreign Affairs Agency Carl Bildt, greeting the leader of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Mustafa Jemilev, underscored that when planning his participation in the work of the 8thForum of Yalta European Strategy, he ordered his assistants to organize a meeting with the leaders of Mejlis in order to “know the latest events in the life of the Crimean Tatar people and Crimea, in the whole”.

The Chairman of Mejlis Mustafa Jemilev provided the high guest with the evaluation of the social-political events of Crimea and Ukraine in lights of the solution of the Crimean Tatar problem, telling in details on the request of the Minister of Sweden about the results of the elections to the local councils of Crimea in October 2010 and the peculiarities of the relations between Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people and the central and Crimean authorities.

Discussing the peculiarities of Ukrainian election legislation the Minister of foreign affairs of Sweden Carl Bildt drew special attention to the lack of the special legal mechanisms, ensuring the representation of Crimean Tatars in the Parliament and local bodies of the representative power.

According to Carl Bildt “Kyiv has to hear the voice of Crimean Tatars, correspondingly, Ukraine should review the system of mixed elections that, in fact, limits the opportunities and chances of the representatives of the national minorities to be elected to the bodies of state power.

Mustafa Jemilev and Carl Bildt also discussed the process of preparation to the International Forum on therestoration of the rights of the Crimean Tatar people to their homeland, its security and guarantees of development in Ukraine. At this, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to Ukraine Stefan Gullgren, who also took part in the discussion, confirmed his intention to take part in the meeting between the leaders of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people and heads of the diplomatic missions and representations of the international organizations, accredited in Ukraine, to be held on October 5, 2011. The main goal of this meeting will be discussing of the concept of the coming International forum.
