Mejlis’ Statement Concerning Taking into Custody of Ex-Prime Minister of Ukraine Julia Timoshenko
On August 5, 2011 Pechersky District Court in Kyiv decided to change the preventive punishment for the former Prime Minister of Ukraine, leader of political party “Batkivschina” Yulia Vladimirovna Tymoshenko from written undertaking not to leave for custody.
The decision of Pechersky District Court in Kyiv adopted during the trial that should provide equal rights and opportunities for all its participants in defending their positions, as well as its subsequent performance and reaction of Ukrainian society, International institutions and official representatives of many states, indicates at violation of the principle of the supremacy of law and testifies to the political goals of the trial against Yulia Tymoshenko.
Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, consistently supporting establishment of the basic principles of democracy and civil society in Ukraine, protection of human rights and freedoms, calls all political and public forces in Ukraine to unite their efforts in order to stop persecution on political grounds.
