On Wednesday September 27, the district court of Simferopol city controlled by the Kremlin, passed the sentence on the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Ilmi Umerov. Umerov was sentenced to two years in a colony-settlement.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announce of the verdict in the court started earlier, without the presence of Ilmi Umerov\u2019s lawyer,Mark Feygin and Human Rights activist, Alexander Podrabinek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the trial, the Ilmi Umerov’s lawyer hoped that the report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, released on September 25, about the situation in annexed Crimea could influence onmitigation of his client\u2019s verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Russian prosecutor demanded the punishment for Ilmi Umerov in the form of 3 years and 6 months ofthe conditional imprisonment with a probation period of 3 years, and 3 years restriction of engaging inpublic and teaching activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The criminal case against Ilmi Umerov was violated in 2016. His arrest, the search and initiation of thecriminal proceeding, detention in a psychiatric hospital for carrying out forced forensic psychiatricexamination of the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis caused a strong public and international resonance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
