{"id":11194,"date":"2011-06-29T13:28:00","date_gmt":"2011-06-29T10:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qtmm.org\/?p=11194"},"modified":"2021-12-29T13:28:29","modified_gmt":"2021-12-29T10:28:29","slug":"roundtable-in-brussels-one-more-step-towards-international-forum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qtmm.org\/en\/roundtable-in-brussels-one-more-step-towards-international-forum\/","title":{"rendered":"Roundtable in Brussels \u2013 One More Step Towards International Forum"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As is known, on June 28, 2011 a roundtable titled \u201cCrimean Tatars: A Missing Piece in Ukrainian Society?\u201d was held in Brussels, European Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative of conducting the roundtable came from the Underrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) and Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The information about the roundtable published on the UNPO\u2019s website (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unpo.org\/article\/12728\">http:\/\/www.unpo.org\/article\/12728<\/a>) is given below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brussels, 29 June 2011 \u2013 The Crimean Tatar issue remains a \u201cpainful legacy of the twentieth century\u201d \u2013 this was the belief of Professor Leonidas Donskis MEP speaking at the opening of the roundtable, \u2018Crimean Tatars: A Missing Piece in Ukrainian Society?\u2019 convened in the European Parliament on 28 June 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over two hours academics, state and civil society representatives, joined together in exchanges concerning the current situation facing Crimean Tatars. This comes twenty years since they could return to their homeland but today they subsist with limits to their cultural expression, increasingly marginalised economically, and without restitution for their confiscated property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marino Busdachin, UNPO General Secretary, noted that \u201cthe question of Crimean Tatars needs to be solved, it is a shame for the Ukrainian government\u2026a shame for the Council of Europe &#8211; in which the question has been addressed a couple of times\u201d without result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Important progress was being made and Natalia Mirimanova, co-director of the Crimean Policy Dialogue, outlining the work in drafting consensual policy proposals and action whereby Crimean Tatars saw \u201ctheir political underrepresentation [\u2026] being compensated by their participation in the dialogue\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The importance of such \u2018living\u2019 policy dialogue was endorsed by Michael Emerson, Associate Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for European Policy Studies, who noted that actors in Crimea were already seeing \u201cthe opportunity to turn [\u2026Crimea] from a threat to civil peace into an exemplary case of intercultural living together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evelina Schulz of the European External Action Service noted that as Ukrainian state funds had been allocated for the rehabilitation of Crimean Tatars \u201cthe EU side will try to ensure that these positive developments will get into concrete action\u201d reflecting increased EU interest in Crimea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The roundtable concluded with clear signs that efforts will continue to facilitate the process of restoration of the Crimean Tatars rights. President Yanukovich\u2019s statement on 28 June 2011 emphasized the necessity to support regional languages and comes as UNPO and others work towards an international forum on Crimean Tatar rights.
