The Honored test pilot of the USSR, the USSR State Prize-winner, and Twice Hero of the Soviet Union Amet-Khan Sultan was born on October 25, 1920 in Alupka, Crimea. During the WW2 he made more than 600 operation flights and personally shot down 30 enemy’s planes and 19 planes, being in the group. He shot down 6 Nazi battle planesin Crimean sky alone.

After the war Amet-Khan Sultan worked for more than 25 years as a test pilot in the scientific-research institute, testing more than 100 various aircrafts. The results of the tests and researches made by Amet-Khan Sultan have great importance for the world and national military and civil aviation even today. He took the direct part in the preparation to the space flights of the first USSR spacemen – Yuri Gagarin, German Titov, Pavel Popovich and others.

Amet-Khan Sultan died tragically on February 1, 1971 making his next regular test flight. He was buried in Novodevichy cemetery in Moscow.

Amet-Khan Sultan’s peerless professional skill, heroism, honesty, aspiration to justice, infinite son’s love to his native land won the deep respect of his colleagues and general public’s gratitude.

On the eve of the 90th anniversary of birth of the famous Hero the broad Ukrainian and international community, his nationals, as well as his sworn brothers and pupils – professional pilots from various countries whom he gave way to the sky, sent numerous appeals to the bodies of the state power of Ukraine and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, asking to give the name of the Twice Hero of the Soviet Union Amet-Khan Sultan to the International airport “Simferopol”.

Unfortunately, the adopting of the corresponding decision of the Crimean authorities delayed unreasonably for subjectivereasons. That is why on January 8, 2013 the Draft Decision of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine #1210 “On giving Amet-Khan Sultan’s name to the International airport “Simferopol” was registered in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
